Root Words - Can stand on its own as a word.

Prefixes- Added before a word to change the meaning and create a new word.

 

Suffixes - Added to the end of a word and changes the word class of a word 

 

Lets have a look at a few examples

 

 

Root Word 

Tidy

 

Now lets add a Prefixes and see how the meaning changes

 

untidy

 

The word has become the opposite of the root word by adding the Prefix.

 

Finally lets go back to the Root word but this time add a Suffix and change the word class

 

Tidy (Adjective)

Tidy-ing (Verb)

Tid-ily (Adverb)
