The old shop stood at the very end of Lantern Street, half-hidden by shadows. Its windows were dusty, and the sign above the door read Curiosities and Wonders. When Lily stepped inside, a faint bell chimed, and the smell of old books filled the air.

Behind the counter sat a tall man with silver hair and eyes that seemed to sparkle like moonlight. “Looking for something special?” he asked softly.

“I—I don’t know,” Lily replied. “Maybe.”

He smiled and reached beneath the counter. “Then perhaps it’s this you’re meant to find.”

He placed a wand on the counter — thin, twisted, and glowing faintly at the tip. The moment Lily touched it, a rush of warmth shot through her fingers, and tiny golden sparks drifted into the air.

“Magic,” she whispered.

The man nodded. “Magic finds those who believe in it.”

R – Retrieve:

  1. What was written on the sign above the shop door?

  2. What did the shop smell like when Lily entered?

I – Interpret:
3. How do you think Lily felt when she touched the wand?
4. What might the shopkeeper mean when he says, “Magic finds those who believe in it”?

C – Choice:
5. Why do you think the author described the man’s eyes as “sparkling like moonlight”?
6. What effect does the description of the shop (“half-hidden by shadows”) have on the reader?
