Grammar Warm Up

LC: to use conjunctions to create complex sentences

and          but         because         then         so

Lose the commas!

Replace the commas with conjunctions  instead:

A) Lady Macbeth took the bloody daggers, she put them in the hands of the guards.

B) Banquo's ghost appeared at the feast, Macbeth leapt back in horror!

C) 'I could not kill him, he looked like my father,' Lady Macbeth told her husband.

D) She crept into the King's bedchamber, she raised the daggers high, she could not kill him!

LC: to identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning

Look at the telling of this story.

What do you notice about the paragraphs?

Discuss with your talk partner:

- are they long or short?

- what is the opening sentence of each paragraph?

- do these opening sentences link to what is in the rest of the paragraph?

Opening sentence from paragraph 1

From then on, both Macbeth and his queen began to suffer long, sleepless nights filled with hideous dreams.

The word 'suffer' tells us that the couple are having a difficult time because of their previous actions. The rest of the paragraph could be about what effect these sleepless nights have on the mental health of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and what they plan to do next.

 How paragraph 1 ends

Look at these opening sentences of  paragraphs from the retelling:

For each one, write what you expect to happen in the rest of the paragraph.

a) Macbeth set out across the heath on another night of thundering skies.

The rest of the paragraph could be about ...

b) As Macbeth stood watching, three apparitions arose from the cauldron.

The rest of the paragraph could be about ...

Let's read the next part of the retelling:

LC: To be able to read and write Roman numerals to 1000.

Complete the RIC.

LC: to summarise the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and identify key details which support this

Can you remember how to summarise?

A good summary is

- brief (short)

- includes the main points of a piece of writing, action or event

- does not include unnecessary details

- is very clear to the reader

Let's read the next part of the story (Alice and Eliza's chapter) and write a clear summary.

LC: to use understanding of maps, symbols and grid references to sketch a map for others to follow

 Using a compass

Use your OS (ordnance survey) symbols to complete the task on Seesaw:

Task 1

a) Identify the features on the map from their symbols.

b) Write the 4 figure grid reference for each feature.

 For example

The historic building = (56, 19)

Using grid references on a map

Task 2

a) On your map, put 4 more features using the Ordnance Survey symbols.

b) Swap with your partner so they can write the grid references for each of your features.
