LC: to understand the influence of Macbeth in culture

You are going to create a sketch of a Shakespeare character. We will use pencils to outline our sketch.

The more pressure you use the darker the line.

Background on 'Macbeth'

It is believed that Shakespeare wrote Macbeth to please King James, who had just become the King of England. King James believed in witches and was thought to be a descendant of Banquo - one of the story's heroes.

King James

William Shakespeare

Shakespeare wrote 10 tragedies, including Macbeth.

Lady Macbeth was portrayed as a cruel and manipulative woman in the play. However, audiences learn that she has been devastated by the loss of a child.

Macbeth is set in Scotland although Shakespeare never went to Scotland.

Actors believe that the play Macbeth is cursed. For this reason, actors try not to pronounce the name of the play when in the theatre, calling it 'The Scottish Play' instead.

The witches tell Macbeth that he will be safe 'until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill Shall come against him'. Macbeth knows that a forest could not move so thinks he is invincible.

The three witches are also known as the 'weird sisters'

In the 11th century, there was a King of Scotland called Macbeth.

Many of the other characters are based on real people too.

King James feared the power of witches and held witch trials. Between 1590 and 1592, more than 70 people were accused of witchcraft in the North Berwick Witch Trials. Many of the accused confessed to their 'crimes' while being tortured. It is unclear how many of the accused were executed.

Let's begin by sketching the shape of a face.
