LC: to understand the purpose and audience of a new text type

 What the teacher read

Exciting News!

What happens next?

LC: To be able to solve word problems involving multiple operations, using bar models as the main heuristic to represent key information.

Last spring, the children at Oakwood Primary decided to create a school garden. At first, the playground looked dull and empty, but the students were excited about the change. They planted vegetables such as carrots and lettuce, along with bright flowers to attract bees and butterflies.

Every week, different classes took turns watering the plants and pulling out weeds. Some students were disappointed when a few plants didn’t grow, but their teacher reminded them that gardening takes patience. By the end of the term, the garden was full of colour, and the vegetables were ready to be picked. The children felt proud because their hard work had paid off.

R- What did the children decide to create at their school?

I- Why do you think the teacher said gardening takes patience?

C- Why does the author use the word “proud” to describe the children’s feelings?

LC: To make predictions based on details stated and implied.

Predicting means...

Making a reasonable guess always depends on the context.

When you are making a prediction you will be thinking about: the setting, the type of text (genre),  the characters, what has already happened, clues from the author.

We are going to read through a text, making a prediction at the end. But be careful - details can be very important when it comes to predictions, so we need to read the text carefully before we start thinking.

Text

Tom stood at the edge of the old playground, staring at the locked shed. Everyone at school said it was empty, but Tom wasn’t so sure. Earlier that morning, he had heard a strange noise coming from inside. Now, as the wind rattled the door, Tom reached into his pocket and felt the cold metal key he had found under the bench.
