Sam was in a hurry. He had promised his sister he would meet her at the park, but he couldn’t find his house key anywhere. He checked his school bag, his coat pockets, and even under the sofa. Nothing.

Just as Sam was about to give up, he remembered feeding the dog earlier that morning. He walked over to the food bowl and smiled. Next to it was his missing key, shining on the floor.

Sam grabbed the key and rushed out of the door, relieved that he wouldn’t be late after all.

LC: Evaluate how authors use figurative language, considering the impact on the reader.

Figurative language - the author’s use of words and ideas to suggest meaning and create mental images.

Simile - When you compare two different things to show a similarity. This creates an image for the readers.

List of similes:

  • "as pale as a ghost”

  • “like a bullet”

  • “as though his insides had turned to ice”

  • “as if he had been Petrified”

“like watching a very slow tennis match”

Read this passage and identify all the similes:

The Midnight Corridor

The corridor was silent, as quiet as a held breath, as Leo crept forward. His candle flickered like a nervous firefly, throwing jumping shadows onto the walls. Every step made his heart pound like a drum, and his hands felt as cold as winter stones.

Suddenly, a door at the end of the corridor creaked open. Leo froze as still as a statue, certain he had been spotted. A draft rushed past him like an invisible ghost, making his robe flutter wildly.

When the door finally shut, Leo let out a sigh. Relief washed over him like warm sunlight after rain, and he hurried on, determined not to be late for his secret lesson.
