Hard Work and Determination
Key message: Success comes from effort, effective practice, determination and learning from feedback.
UNCRC: Article 28 – Every child has the right to an education.
British Value: Rule of Law – Following agreed classroom rules helps everyone learn in a safe and fair environment.
Today we are thinking about working hard and doing our best.
Imagine two children in a class.
One child finds maths easy. They finish their work quickly, but when something becomes difficult, they stop trying.
Another child finds maths challenging. They listen carefully, ask questions, practise and keep improving.
Which child is showing determination?
Explain that being successful at school isn't always about getting everything right straight away. It is about the effort we put in, the strategies we use and the progress we make.
Sometimes we might want to rush our work or give up when something is tricky.
But working hard means taking pride in what we do, checking our answers, listening to feedback and trying to improve.
What would you do?
Can you suggest a resilient response?
- You have been asked to write two paragraphs, but you have only written three sentences.
- You cannot solve a difficult maths problem.
- Your teacher asks you to improve your work.
- Your friend finishes before you, and you feel frustrated.
Why is asking for help, using classroom resources and taking time to improve are all examples of being a good learner.
Reflection
Article 28 tells us that every child has the right to education. We all have a responsibility to help make our classroom a place where everyone can learn.
Our classroom rules help us do this by encouraging listening, concentration, kindness and respect.
Thought for the day: "Don't aim to be better than someone else. Aim to be better than you were yesterday."
Daily challenge: Produce one piece of work today that shows your very best effort. Check it carefully and improve something before handing it in.
