LC: to create complex sentences with a relative clause for 'who'

LC: To round numbers

We are going to be using the rounding rules we have learnt over the last few lessons to help us round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.

After catching a giant boar for his fourth task, Hercules was told to clean the dirty stables of a huge herd of cattle. He dug large trenches that changed the route of two nearby rivers so that their water flowed through the stables and cleaned them.

Next, Hercules defeated a group of vicious birds that were destroying crops and villages. When he returned for his next task, he was asked to bring back an enormous bull that had been charging around a nearby island. When he arrived, he worked quickly to capture the bull and take it to King Eurystheus.

R - What was Hercules told to clean?

LC: To notice if what I'm reading isn't making sense and have strategies to try to work out the meaning.

As they read, good readers check things make sense and notice when they have an understanding “breakdown”.

Good readers  don’t just carry on when something doesn’t make sense!

Let's read the below sentences and identify 

My sister has a small red bike with streamers on the handlebars. She enjoys riding her blue bike in the park.   

Mr Smith had long, straggly hair and a beard that matched. As he stood supervising the children on the playground, he stroked his smooth chin.

Joey the budgie has blue feathers and a yellow beak. He has a bell and a mirror in his cage, but no toys Every day he plays with the small plastic ball.

King Eurystheus was amazed that Hercules had made it this far so he sent him to capture four man-eating horses. Hercules dug a deep river around the horses that filled with sea water. With nothing but grass to eat, the horses eventually calmed down and were captured.

Hercules’ ninth task was to bring back a magic belt that belonged to a lady named Hippolyte. Hippolyte was happy to help Hercules but was worried that he was really there to start a fight. Wanting to avoid getting hurt, Hercules quickly stole the belt and sailed away.

R - Who was happy to help Hippolyte?

I - Summarise the first paragraph.

LC: Infer characters’ feelings and thoughts.

An inference is an idea or conclusion that we reach from evidence and reasoning.

Inferring is making an educated guess, a choice, a decision.

We use clues and our background knowledge to make sense of something when we are not explicitly given the information.

Our minds are making inferences constantly. For example, if someone yawns, we infer that they are tired.

Often, like the above example the inferences we make are from visual clues – the things we observe.

Why is she feeling that way?

Who is the man?

Where are they?

Does the title give you any clues about this image?

What are the characters thinking? 

Does this picture remind you of anything that has happened in your own life?

You will be given an image. Look at it carefully and answer the inference questions.
