Thousands of years ago, there lived a half man, half god named Hercules. When he was younger, a curse was put on Hercules that forced him to do terrible things. When the curse was finally broken, he wanted to be forgiven for the things that he had done. He was told to visit King Eurystheus who would give him 12 difficult tasks to complete to earn forgiveness.

For the first two tasks, Hercules was asked to defeat the Nemean lion and the Lernaean hydra. These were two powerful beasts that had been terrifying the local people. Next, King Eurystheus challenged him to catch an incredibly fast deer. It took Hercules a whole year to catch the animal but he was eventually successful and asked for the next task.

R - What was Hercules asked to do for the first two weeks?

I - How do you think Hercules felt when he was under the curse? Use evidence from the text.

C - Can you identify effective adjectives in the text?

LC: To identify key words and phrases in a text.

Good readers identify what is really important ...key words… phrases… sentences… ideas

  • If you Google the word sport, you will get 3 million sites! So as we read, trying to sort out what is important and what is not is really important.
  • As we read we come across... key words… phrases… sentences… or ideas. Not everything in a book has equal value. We have to puzzle out what are the key words and pay special attention to them.

Think aloud. What’s important?
There may not be right and wrong answers!

LC: To know what Christians believe about the origins of sin.

What do you know about the word sin?

What do you understand it to mean?

Christians believe that God created the world from nothing.

The story of the creation is found in the Old Testament of the Bible.

There are two different versions of the story.

However, Christians do not think it is important how God created the world, as this is beyond their imagination, just that he did.

Let’s remind ourselves of the story.

“God saw the world was good.”

What would a good world be like?

Now let's learn about the second creation story.

VIDEO - Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-3)

Some Christians believe that the story in the Bible is the literal truth.

Some Christians believe the story is a metaphor – a story told to help explain a more complex idea.

The Story of The Fall

(Genesis 3)

The Fall - BBC Bitesize

Literal – What might Christians believe about the cause of sin and temptation in the world today?

Metaphorical – Who/what might each aspect of the story represent?

Now complete this task independently using all the ideas you have gathered.
