Have a go at experimenting with the conjunctions below to make new sentences.

What does the term fact mean?
What does the term opinion mean?
Decide which of the following statements are facts and which are opinions.
1. Pandas are cuter than meerkats.
2. The Houses of Parliament are in London.
3. Apples grow on trees.
4. My cat is the best cat in the world!

Teacher model: fact or opinion.
Highlight facts in one colour and opinions in another colour.

Your turn: Read the passage below and underline facts in one colour and underline the opinions in a different colour.

Super Sentence Spellers
Write each sentence that I dictate to you. How many of the words do you know how to spell?
Learning
Focus: Use apostrophes to spell words for plural possession including where the plural is irregular.
Copy-Cat Ping-Pong
The first in each of the pairs of words below is a singular noun and the next is its plural form.
Repeat each pair of words after me.
child children
person people
man men
woman women
goose geese
mouse mice
louse lice
ox oxen
To make the words plural, we do not add an 's'. The plurals are irregular.
Now I will say the single noun you will 'bat back' the irregular plural.
Read the following sentences with me. They demonstrate plural possession where the plural is irregular.
The children's favourite books were on display in the library.
The geese's loud honking echoed across the lake as they protected their nests.
The women's experience of travelling across the mountains showed their strength and determination.
There is more than one child – children; more than one goose – geese; and more than one woman – women.
What do you notice about the position of the apostrophe in these examples?
When the apostrophe is used to show plural possession where the plural is irregular, it is positioned before the s.
