LC: To write for pleasure

The Young Writers Magazine has asked its readers to write a fantastic opening for a story, based on a picture. At Stoneyholme, we are always up for a challenge.

Today you are going to have the opportunity to write just for the joy of it! BUT you will need to remember to apply to your writing everything that you've learned.

What does a story opening need?

Choose from these pictures and off you go!

Thursday 6th November 2025

LC: Using a zone of relevance, sketch Hameldon Hill and its surrounding environment.

Fieldwork is when you go outside the classroom and find things out for yourself.

When carrying out fieldwork, you will need to think like a geographer. What is the field work? Where and how will you carry it out? And why will you be doing it?

What?

  • observe
  • plan
  • question
  • research

Where?

  • use maps and plans to explain where places are

How?

  • collect and record data to explain what people, places and environments are like
  • stay safe

Why?

  • think about connections between human and physical features
  • present your findings using maps, pictures, charts, diagrams and writing

Activity

This afternoon we are going to produce a 'zone of relevance' map. I have modelled one below, I am sure yours will be far more detailed! The centre of your map will be Stoneyholme Community Primary School, the community will be near by and Hameldon hill will be far away.

1. Start by sketching our school by using google maps to get the outline.

2. Using observational skills, sketch out the surrounding area. Remember to rotate your map as your draw. Your teacher will model this.

3. Sketch Hameldon hill, remember to sketch what you see not what you think a hill looks like!

If the weather is poor we can use this image to help!
