LC: To use dictionaries to check the meaning of words and put words in to alphabetical order.

Last week we had a look at looking up words in a dictionary to find the meaning. 

However, sometimes it can be tricky to find a word because the letter that comes after the first letter can be further in to the dictionary. 

Let's do this task together:

Let's take a look at the word spoil.

S is the letter that we need to look for.

What letter comes before S?

What letter comes after S?

Now you should have found the words that begin with the letter S.

What letter do we need to look for next?

Take a look at this alphabet line.

In the section where you have found all of the words that begin with S what words come first? Are there words that begin with SA or SP? 

Take a closer look and you will find that words that begin with SP are further in to the S section. 

Now find the meaning of spoil and write it down in your books.
