LC: To infer characters feelings

Previously we have been looking at pictures to detect how a character might be feeling. We have also asked some questions to help us be great detectives so that we can infer.

When we infer, we use the background knowledge to understand what might be happening.

A great reader will always be thinking of questions whilst they're reading.

For example, in English we have been reading about The Enormous Crocodile.

You were great at hot seating the crocodile and asking him lots of questions. You even predicted what he might do.

We inferred from the picture that The Enormous Crocodile is probably feeling hungry because he is showing his sharp teeth.

Today, we are going to challenge ourselves a little further and see if we can understand how a character might be feeling just by reading a short passage.

Ben was very excited to go on his school trip. He was looking forward to seeing all of the animals at the zoo. His favourite animal was a panda. The night before, Ben put on two alarms so that he was sure to make it on time and not be late. In the morning Ben woke up and realised that his alarm didn't ring. Ben was very late.

How might Ben be feeling?

Let's practice with another short passage:

Emily was sad about her birthday being on a school day because she knew that all of her family would be busy working. Emily wished that her cousins and friends could come over to celebrate with her but nobody had spoken about her birthday. When Emily was about to enter her house, she saw something strange through her living room window. She peeked through and saw that the curtains were closed but there were hundreds if baloons on the floor. She opened the door and she heard a loud sound. Everyone screamed "surprise!".

How do you think Emily was feeling?

Independent

Read the passage and think about what the character might be feeling.

Ted was starting his new class in Year 4. He knew that the boys would start their swimming lessons in Year 4 but Ted had never been swimming. He always had a fear of deep water. In the morning he told his mum that he didn't want to go to school.

How do you think Ted is feeling?

Ted is feeling...

Nancy felt bored because it was raining outside and didn't know what to do. None of her friends had called to play with her. Just then, she heard the phone ringing and she heard her mum speaking to her best friend who wanted to come over and play.

How do you think Nancy is feeling?

Nancy is feeling...

Challenge!

Can you explain why Nancy is feeling the way she is using the word because?

For example:

Nancy is feeling...because...

Now let's chunk this part of the story into different parts...

What happens first?
Then what happens next?

Finally, let's look at our T4W version of the clever trick and learn it...

Add trick 2 to your story board.

LC: To be able to compare and order numbers up to 1000.

LC: To name and locate the 4 countries of the UK.

Using the atlas can you find and name the continents of the world.

Now find and name the oceans.

Using an atlas, locate the U.K on a world map. Now complete the map below.

Choose a different colour for each of the counties that form the UK. Your teacher will demonstrate how to shade for the list below the map and apply that colour to the chosen area.
