Ask pupils if they can tell you what the first day of the week is and the last. Which day is highlighted in the picture of the calendar? Discuss the Explore question.

Ask pupils if they know the special name for Saturday and Sunday? How about the special names for the other days of the week? Ask them to talk with their partners about this, and look for opportunities to introduce the words 'weekday' and 'weekend'.

Is the day January? Can you work out how many days are in January from the calendar?

Which is the first and the last month of the year, and so on. Ask them about their birthdays. Which month is your birthday in? What is the date?
