Apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words.

Make predictions based on what has been read so far.

Great news children...

Your brand new pets have arrived.

They are in a special box waiting for all of you in Year One to take care of them.

What do you think the pet will be?

Your pet is a train!

It has come with the book, 'How to Train a Train'.

Read these pages from the book together with your teacher.

Your teacher will read a sentence then you will repeat it.

Remember your 'smooth reading' and interesting voices.

Now let's look closely at one of the important words from the book:

steam

Train

Word rap:

Now fill this magic word mat in together.

Tell your teacher what you have learned when you watch these videos about steam trains.

Watch - Steam trains for children, Gecko's Real Vehicles

Tell me...

Tell me more...

Watch - Steam trains Blippi

Now say this sentence together:

Early steam engines mostly just sit in museums.

What does the word steam mean in this sentence?

Here is another sentence with the same new word:

Steam pours from the train's chimney.

Your teacher will now say a sentence for you to repeat three times.

Remember your actions for full stop and capital letters!

To understand how to keep safe in the sun and be protected from sun damage.
What is the sun?
  • What do you know about the sun?

  • What does it feel like when we’re outside on a sunny day?

The sun helps us stay warm and gives us light.

But too much sun can hurt our skin and make us feel unwell.

Now lets read this story about Sam!
  • 🌞 Sunny Sam’s Day at the Park 🌳

One sunny Saturday morning, Sam woke up and looked out the window.

The sky was bright blue, and the sun was shining high in the sky.

Hooray!” shouted Sam. “It’s a perfect day for the park!”

He put on his favourite shorts and T-shirt, grabbed his football, and ran to the door.

    But…
    He forgot his hat.
    He forgot his sunglasses.
And he didn’t put on any sunscreen. 😬

When Sam got to the park, he played and played.

    He ran up the slide.
    He zoomed down the hill.
He kicked his football high in the air.

The sun got hotter... and hotter... and hotter. ☀️

    Sam’s face turned red.
    His arms felt tingly.
And his head started to ache.

“Oh no,” said Sam. “I don’t feel very good.”

Sam sat under a big tree and waited for his mum.

When she saw him, she said,
Oh Sam! You forgot your sun hat and sunscreen! The sun is strong today.

She gave him water, helped him cool down in the shade, and took him home.

Later, while resting on the sofa with a cool drink, Sam said:

    “Next time, I’ll remember:

    • My hat for my head,

    • My cream for my skin,

    • And I’ll play in the shade when the sun is too hot!”

Now, Sam is a Sun Safety Superstar! 🌟

    And he always says:

    The sun is fun,
    But I stay smart—
    I protect my skin
    Right from the start!

    🌞 The End

    🌈 Discussion Questions:

    1. What did Sam forget to do?

    2. How did the sun make Sam feel?

    3. What can you do to stay safe in the sun?

Lets complete our activity - draw items which keeps us safe from the sun!
