Question:
Who are our heroes?
Listen, think, share
Write the word ‘hero’ for the children to see and then ask them to describe what a hero is. Ask them who their heroes are and why. Ask children to talk through who their heroes are and why. List the qualities that our heroes have in common.
Look at the KS1 resource, talk through each image and talk about why they are considered to be heroes.
Ask the children if anyone can be a hero, talk about why or why not? Talk about some of the heroic things some of the people in the resource have done. Why do we need heroes? Do heroes make the world a better place? Discuss the difference between heroes on television or in films (some of whom might be superheroes) and real-life heroes. People are fascinated by the amazing feats of superheroes. Refer to any superheroes the children may have mentioned and discuss why they are extraordinary. Pose the question: “If you could have superhero powers, what would they be?” Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having super abilities.
Explain in real life, our heroes don’t have super powers but they have lots of other powers that make them very special! Things like being kind, brave, caring, supportive, honest. Can you think of anymore?
Reflection
Lots of people talk about famous people or superheroes as heroes but for most of us the heroes are often the people who are there for us every day and help us when we find things hard.
