Today we are going to sequencing numbers using numicons. 

Choose one Numicon piece and ask:

• What can you tell me about this Numicon?

• How many holes can you see?

• Can you count them?

• Which numeral matches it? 

Use the numbers to match the numerals to the right numicon. 

Place Numicon pieces 1–5 and numeral in a mixed-up arrangement.

Children work in pairs to match each numeral to the correct Numicon piece.

Place Numicon 1–5 and their matching numerals in a line.

Ask the children to close their eyes while you remove one.

Ask "Which number is missing?"

Choose 5 children and give them a numicon each, with support children to stand in the right order. 

Ask:

• Which number comes first?

• Which number comes after 2?

• Which number comes before 5?

• What happens to the Numicon pieces as the numbers get bigger?
