Today we are going to learning about conservation which means - that a number stays the same even when objects are rearranged or spaced differently.

Lets have a look at these pictures and count how many.

What do you notice about the bears?

Are they in the same order?

Now lets sit in a circle and use our counting blocks to help us learn more.

The Number Doesn't Change”

The children to count out 5 blocks.

  1. Count them together.
  2. Make a line.
  3. Rearrange them into a circle.
  4. Spread them out.
  5. Put them into a pile.
  6. Count each arrangement.

The key question throughout is:

“Did the number change, or did the objects just move?”

Cross the river with oral blending

Stand up/sit down with initial phonemes
