Policy for the English Curriculum

September 2021

The Intent of the English Curriculum:

The intent of the English curriculum is for the pupils to become effective and confident communicators in English and to enjoy and appreciate all aspects of the English language.

This competence in English will help the pupils to develop self-awareness, awareness and respect for others, and an understanding of the world they inhabit.

Objectives:

To ensure all learners are offered the broadest range of learning experiences in language, literature and media text so that they can, as speakers, listeners, readers and writers:

  • Take pleasure in all aspects of English and literacy
  • Evaluate critically the power language exercises in our lives
  • Appreciate the impact of language in creating and recreating emotion and the ways in which it can be used to get things done

To ensure the delivery of the National Curriculum for English and the EYFS statutory educational programmes for communication and language and literacy.

To seek to ensure that all pupils attain their best.

To seek to ensure continuity and progression from the EYFS statutory educational programmes through to the National Curriculum expectations for Year 6.

To recognise that pupil provision is attainment not age-related.

To recognise the contribution English can make to developing thinking skills; social, moral, spiritual and cultural education; PSHE and Citizenship, as well as to all other curricular subjects.

Principles:

•          The English curriculum will incorporate speaking and listening, reading and writing.  The pupils will learn through, and be made aware of, the interrelationship of all language skills.

•          English skills will be developed through broader applications and more challenging approaches as the learner progresses through the school.

•          Pupils will be offered a wide range of activities, contexts and resources in order to develop their use, understanding and enjoyment of English, including outside visits, visitors to school and use of the outdoor environment.

•          A structured framework for the development of English skills will aim to increase the independence of the learner.

•          The principle of Equal Opportunity will be incorporated into all aspects of planning and delivery of the English Curriculum.

•          Opportunities for the development of English will be identified and exploited in all areas of the curriculum.
